A collection of links to things that I like on the web, in all sorts of areas! Enjoy...

I am very proud of my work on the Rogue Element web site. Rogue Element are a synthesizer band, and the site includes nearly 40 minutes off complete tracks for download, wallpapers, and even samples from a Tangerine Dream Mellotron tape bank!

Astronomical 3D

This section links to major accurate astronomical data for 3D modellers and artists

Constantine Thomas' Planetary Maps Hub

Useful image maps, and a directory of other sites. An essential visit.

Dave Seals JPL planetary maps

More high res state of the art planetary image maps for the 3D modeller

Bjorn Jonsson's Maps

Not content with providing some of the most detailed image maps available, Bjorn has written his own renderer!

JHT's Planetary Pixel Emporium

More image maps for the planetary modeller.

Atmospheric Optics

A lovely site dedicated to the phenomenon of haloes, sundogs, (parhelia), rainbows and similar effects. Apart from a stunning selection of beautiful images there's a very unusual and interesting piece of software available for free download (Halosim) that will simulate these.

The International Association of Astronomical Artists

The object of the IAAA, as a non-profit foundation, is to implement and participate in astronomical and space art projects, to promote education about astronomical art and to foster international cooperation in artistic work inspired by the exploration of the Universe.

Jim Plaxco's Site:

A collection of images of Mars created from the raw image data from various robotic missions to Mars.

Humour

Internet Anagram Server

Feed your bosses name through this, with profanity allowed. Hours of fun to be had here...

Dilbert

Scot Adam's definitive example of what a humour site should be. Any techie who thinks he is alone in hating what management throw at him should visit here for emotional support and a belly laugh.

Greg's Cult Music

Not so much cult, as just plain awful. Yodelling for Jesus, I dug my daddy's grave, Blind man's penis, (yes, really!), Fart Rap, Jive Talking in Chinese. All these songs and much worse can be found on Greg's pages.

Screenhead.

Tasteless images, lots of swearing, but very funny. Regularly updated links to the crass and amusing.

BBC7 Radio Listen Again

The most wonderful thing ever to happen to radio. The BBC make tons of great classic comedy stuff available online. And you can pick a program at a time convenient to you - the reason I now listen to more radio than I watch television.

Other 3D graphics:

Panorama Factory

Feed in a sequence of scanned or digital landscape shots - out pops a top quality panorama, (after a bit of memory and disk thrashing). Free to try, and a paradigm of why shareware is still important.

Terragen

Impressive landscapes, and the best, most realistic skies available anywhere for free. What better recommendation could you ask for? Development is on hold at the moment, but an essential download.

3D Objects

Star Trek Ship Models

Same thing, but for star trek.

B5MG

Babylon 5 version. .

Movie Mesh Site.

Mixed Sources, (Aliens, Starship Troopers etc.), but some more superb quality models

DAZ3D

Great quality and reasonably priced Poser products. Some free stuff. They also now support Bryce.

General 3D

PovRay

The free 3d program. Ease of use is a weak point, but it's well supported, you can have the source code, and it's a great start for the impoverished.

Ray Tracing Competition.

Of particular interest to PovRay users  Stunning images from low end packages. Many with source.

FLAY

Essential for Lightwave users - News, Plug-ins, Tutorials

Escher Contest

I hope this stays online - amazingly clever reinterpretations of Escher images using Photoshop.

The rarest sites - Generally and genuinely useful!

Despite the blurb, I remain unconvinced that the Internerd is a genuinely useful tool for people who don't use computers for fun. Here are a few sites from that rarest category, the genuinely useful.

Streetmap

Type in your postcode, and get a detailed map back, centred on that area. It has a few more tricks up it's sleeve, but that will do for a start.

Time Out.

The magazine is good - the web site extends beyond the tight "this week" focus, and adds links to buy tickets online. Functional, and with a valid role, separate from the mag.

Google

My favourite search engine. Reliable, comprehensive, easy to use... And the best sites really do come back top of  the list.

ZDNET Computer news.

Excellent computer news site, with many interesting articles and downloads too. I particularly recommend the columns by Rupert Goodwins - his cynical wit and industry insight combine to great effect!
