The N-1 Moon Rocket

Introduction

In the summer of 2007 I decided I would try and make a model in software of the Soviet N-1 moon rocket. When I started I was not at all sure I would be able to find enough references to do a good job – the program was top secret until the late nineties, and good photographs are rare.

However as I progressed I found more and more photographs, many of which were not at all well known in the west. I also had to work out what I was looking at, which version of rocket, which way round it was and a host of other things. Even something as apparently simple as the colour was not easy!

I therefore decided it would be a good idea to collect up the information I found, and the reference images, to help anyone else wanting to learn more about this mighty machine.

In many cases the copyright situation with images is unclear, and I have been unable to trace owners. If you own copyright on any image, I will be very happy to remove it on request – see the mail link at the bottom of every page. My general approach has been to provide a list of links to image sources on the bottom of each page.

In my quest for good images, I frequently came across broken links, which is why I would very much like to make the images more widely available. It would be a real shame to lose these. I have used images from other web sites, these are credited with a link to the source page at the bottom of each web page of mine.

Corrections:

I am sure there are mistakes in these pages, despite my best efforts. If you spot anything I have got wrong, please let me know. I’d also love to hear of new images of the mighty N-1!

These web pages would not have been possible without the help of many people who provided information, and pointed me the right way. Many run web sites which are listed in the LINKS section.

My particular thanks go to the people hanging out in the IAAA mailing list, the space modelers list, the forums at Novosti Kosmonavtiki, and specifically:
