Review - Craig Padilla, Vostok

This CD consists of one long track, fifty one and a half minutes long.

The Vostok of the title refers not to the Russian spacecraft, but to Lake Vostok, a gigantic lake under the ice of Antarctica. Given the subject matter, it will come as no surprise that quiet, gentle, ambient tones are very much the order of the day.

Fortunately the twin cliché temptations of whale noises and running water have been avoided! Slow, deep, breathe-like resonant tones dominate. Higher pitched echoing sounds arrive after a few minutes, and start to come and go, but the pace remains calm throughout.

I like this CD very much, it does a nice job of skirting the edges of musicality, with enough detail in the sound that you can listen to it directly - although ambient, it does not have to be background music.

It rapidly became one of my favourite pieces of ambient music. Like back in the dark with your headphones on, and let this subtle piece of music transport you to the dark watery depths under Antarctica!

Overall: 8/10
