The music of 'Under the Dome', (daft name!), is normally pretty busy with lots of interesting noises rumbling along to great effect. I like it a lot. This is a much quieter affair, and though described as a live album, there's no way you could tell by listening to it. The ten tracks named on the cover are also a bit misleading, there is no pause between them, and it feels very much like one long smooth piece.
Although gentle, there's still plenty going on, with strong use of moving stereo images, and rich tones. The melodic lines are simple, but effective, and work well with the busier aspects of the overall sound. A deep shimmering buzz effect runs right through the piece.
It look me a while to work out what the last sections reminded me of - it's the quieter instrumental bits from 'The Lamb lies down on Broadway'.
This calmer album may surprise fans of his other work, but I suspect it may win him a few more fans.
