This is a bit different from other releases I have heard by Syndromeda. (For example, see my review of "Birth of a black hole"). For one thing it's a live album, recorded at Jodrell Bank, though you can only really tell by the applause at the end of each track. For another, the bass frequencies are much stronger, and it will really give your speakers a workout!
Whereas their other work I know is dominated by fairly rapid distinct notes, this one starts on "So so far away" with lovely deep rich sad slowly rolling tones. This much more atmospheric approach is applied to most of this album, and is a very effective change of direction. the track is 18 minutes long, and takes its time to develop, seven minutes in and distorted voices are heard, before a bass pattern begins to build and grow. 12 minutes in, and higher pitched brief notes are added, along with percussive trills. Excellent.
Next up, "The last influence". A bouncy mid range sequence holds the whole thing together nicely. The drumming is quite strong on this track, and to my ear has something of an American Indian feel. Half way through everything stops except the drums, then a new theme moves into the space created. Things then rebuild before simplifying down to the drones again.
"No way back" begins in more typical Syndromeda style, with a rapid bouncy midrange sequence, (though still in minor key). I like this less than other tracks, despite its 10 minute length, it does not really develop much, or go anywhere.
"Phaedron" returns to the deep dark form in style. Starting slow and menacing it picks up pace and energy, and is soon rumbling along with real menace. "Slow Heat" also starts with the deep drones,
On "Conjunction Area" the keyboards have a more choral sound, which provides a welcome touch of variety. The lead lines include some strong phasing, and are very effective.
Finally comes "The end of the circle". A relatively short track, but powerfully percussive, and a good ending to a good CD.
Overall: My favourite CD by Syndromeda, darker than their other material and much better for it.
