Review - Reclining Music, Kelvin L. Smith.

This ambient work has 11 tracks in total.

We kick off with 'Freshwater'. Tones shift from side to side and running water can be heard in the background. It's a rather clichéd start, but pleasant enough. With the second track 'Mountain of Light', he really hits his stride. Over a backing of smooth shifting low chords with a gentle waver, shimmering tones and chime like sounds create a wonderfully atmospheric and peaceful effect. Lovely stuff.

Sonosync 58 is up next, linked to the previous track by some more watery noises. Simple piano phrases appear over the top, a bit reminiscent of Brian Eno's "Music for Films". Keyboard chords replace the piano, and the waves continue to wash in underneath it all.

Aventurine, is again a simple, gentle effective piece. And "Lonely Longing" too is subtle and calm, with a good range of low shifting and higher, fainter tones. The album continues in a similar mode, lacking any trace of abrasiveness or edge - it is supremely relaxing, often with a slightly sad feel, and almost demands listening with the lights down and eyes shut.

The album ends with the slightly stranger harmonies of "Ocean of Milk" and "A moment passed", where the only clearly percussion elements arrive in the last few minutes of the CD.

Overall this is a serene piece of ambient music. Parts are a bit clichéd, (despite liner notes to the contrary - Sorry, but I find the running water sounds far more over-used than whale song or nose flutes these days). But at the best parts are very impressive indeed. Likely to appeal to those who enjoyed Eno's 'Music for..' period, or Harold Budd. (And visa versa!).

Overall: 7.5 / 10 Supremely relaxing.
