Review - Arc - Octane.

This album consists of 5 tracks, 8-14 minutes long. First up is "Steam". After a deceptively gentle start, it's soon thumping away with a regular thud and chug, vaguely evocative of a steam engine. But there's nothing old fashioned here, it's still very electronic. Choir like minor key harmonies arrive after a bit, but don't stay long. The rhythm is powerful, and it is very strong track, in every sense.

"Who walks behind You", track 2, is not a conventional Arc track, just scattered electronic noises for a couple of minutes before a sad chiming melody comes to the fore. This gradually gets denser, as the layers pile on, then it simplifies itself again to an ending.

Next up, the fourteen and a half minute title track. It develops nicely with a shifting rhythm, and some deep growling noises, (a bit more chugging too!). Things change as it goes along and gains pace and complexity. Once more the route to the exit is simplification.

Turn and face me, a shade under 9 minutes. Subtle, and ambient, with some machine like noises. Towards the end, electric piano and flute arrive with a simple melody, before blending into the final track, Relay. This is soon moving rapidly along, powered by a steady driving bass sequence. In the last few minutes it rather fades away, for a slightly disappointing ending to the album.

Overall I like this album. A similarity of styles links the pieces well, and a driving pace pervades most of the tracks.

Overall: 7.5 / 10. Workman like collection of solid tracks.
